“A Sound Environment”
Rock n Roll has a reputation for being loud and obnoxious. It’s a beautiful thing in my opinion. Joyous and unafraid. Historically I believe this approach came largely from a post-World War Two overall attitude of, “we are the greatest, strongest, and most victorious nation on earth!,” which has pervaded nearly all music since. Now I’m not trying to cultivate hearing damaged rock n roll kids (I know that standing next to loud drummers and electric guitarists in mostly small clubs has taken its toll on my own hearing – I’ve worn ear plugs for 10 of my 20 years as a professional in an attempt to ward of any further damage), but there needs to be a healthy security blanket of volume surrounding an improviser…
