Babik

Babik was Django Reinhardt’s son.  I’m told the name means “little one” but I have no verification of that.  Our gypsy jazz group Babik considered ourselves “sons of Django,” so adopted the name, and had to put this tune in our song list.  It leans toward the BeBop vein more than standard gypsy jazz.  BeBop was coming around as a new artform in Django’s mid to later career and he was influenced by all that he heard no doubt.

Melody: The melody is a bit of a finger twister, but a good study on mixing major and minor “blue” notes together.  The overall Key is F major, but it has a lot of chromatic notes thrown in as well… which is a trademark of BeBop.  The chord changes overall are what is called “Rhythm Changes.
