Ode to Joy – Beethoven

Perennial favorite of all ages, the triumphant theme from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.  The Fiddle Jam approach doesn’t usually focus on classical tunes so much, as there are plenty of sources out there for that kind of learning, but we’ll make an exception for this one (scroll down to check out our “fiddle-ized” Artist version below!).  Easy version is in the key of D major.  Beginners can stop at the end of the second “A” section if they want to.  The fiddle version is moved up one string to the key of A for more of that zing-y fiddle tone (and later double strings too!).

Back-ups: EZ… play the name of each chord.

Trouble shooting: Knowledge of low A1 on G string needed, as well as dotted quarter/eighth note combination rhythm.

Advanced: Try using 4th finger A on the D string instead of open A’s.

Side Notes: How many commercials can you find that have used this tune?  We can think of at least 3.  There are probably many more!

Just for fun, check out the Muppets TV show version of this song!
