“GIG ETIQUETTE AND THE REAL WORLD”

Getting the chance to “sit in”with a band can be a real “boost in the arm” as they say, and it need not be filled with fear and loathing if you just understand a few simple things about how these situations usually work.

First off, music is very much like conversation.  Nobody wants to listen to a blabbermouth  for very long, or someone who repeats themselves endlessly, so don’t take too many “choruses” (see “about boogie woogie”). Take the turn given to you and get out of the way musically, and maybe physically too if it’s a small and cramped stage and don’t play anything but complimentary and supportive background things while someone else is “soloing”.  It’s also pretty tiring to listen to someone who speaks (or plays) too soft, or too loud for any length of time (see below about adjusting volume and tone).
