Jam Band is a style and category of music that emerged in the 1990’s that features… you guessed it… jamming by a whole band!  This is largely a live music event and is quite popular at festivals in the USA and elsewhere.  These ensembles are most praised for their abilities, as a group, to improvise together, mostly using dynamics and intensity shifts more than fancy chord progressions (like Jazz).  Many Jam Band artists like Phish and String Cheese Incident have grown in popularity to cult status.  Some might put these bands in the Rock music category, but these bands are usually quite comfortable with style blending and bending, freely borrowing from Country, Blues, & Jazz as much as Rock and other world musics.
