My very limited improv/jamming techniques started with playing in the key of the song. Then it evolved to playing a scale for each chord. I thought i had to memorize each chord of every song. Now I realize staying locked into the chords as they progress (so I can play appropriately with them), comes from understanding basic chord progressions (1-4-5) and being aware of other subtle cues.
The cues/clues come from: “Listen, feel, watch, ask.”
It may seem obvious, but I didn’t realize this was a skill set i needed to develop.
Again, your content and teaching style are giving me hope that I can improve and go to the next level.
