1) Featured Lesson of the Month: People seem to be enjoying last month’s featured lesson of Bob Marley’s “Jammin‘” so I think I’ll extend it’s All Access coding for everyone for a bit yet.
Re-post for our newest members:
Jammin’ is an iconic tune in the Reggae style. Maybe you’ve never heard of or even thought of violin in Reggae music? But, yes, violin, our most expressive and beloved instrument, can really play any style!
The melody, as written, is really quite simple. Bob Marley never sang it the same twice, so this version is more or less a consolidation and fiddle jam-izing of the “best of” so, if your reading skills are not so great yet, don’t sweat it, just interpret the notes the best way you can in your own version! Improvisation/Jamming can easily be done with a B Blues scale 0-1-3 fingering on the A & E strings. You’ll hear my example in the video. Jam along with me! You’d be surprised at what you can pickup via osmosis by doing this! ;~))

2) FIDDLE JAM NEWS: I’m headed to the Florida Folk Festival today to accompany a couple of my private students in a fiddling contest. I’m told that this Festival is the longest running Folk Festival in the country (USA)! I’ll see what there might be to report about any insights I might get and tips on participating in this kind of event.
4) As referenced above, many of you know that I’ve been doing a monthly column for my friend Mike Spear’s iFiddle Magazine. We’ve made a couple decisions recently. One, that for the next issue (June) I’ll do a lesson on Fiddle Fingerboard Visualization, and how knowing your way around visually and internalizing it can help you while playing over chords and picking things out by ear. Two, previously, we’ve kept the video lessons I’ve done for him listed as “private” on YouTube so only our subscribers could view them, and now we’ll “open the vault” to the public.
Check these out if you haven’t already:
Scales, Arpeggios, and Practice
You can always check out the Fiddle Jam Institute YouTube Channel if interested too. Also, “liking” our Facebook page is helpful to promotion as well.
Check out the newest lessons posts (they are always listed at the bottom of each page on the site!)
If you have any questions or comments, please feel very free to post them below. I love to hear from you!

Remember, if you ever want off of this list, just let me know! I’m not looking to spam anyone with unwanted inbox intrusions. I’ll most likely be sending this out a couple times a month as we head into this new phase… maybe just a little more when there’s something new going on. Till next time!
