Here, fresh off the gig, still wearing my tie, I report for you on what it actually takes to do one of these kinds of gigs.
Hint: being a good reader is almost always a necessity… and knowing at least the first 16 or so bars of Pachelbel’s Canon in D (that’s usually all you ever need of it before the bride is down the isle!).
PS: I’ve been brewing on the development of a course called “Improvised Second Fiddle,” a subject I touch on here, not just for Classical wedding gigs, but all kinds of gigs. I’ve found that it’s a real art-form in its own right to be able to creatively (and cool-y) back others up as needed, on the fly; and in the real world, is a skill that you just might use more than being a great soloist! If this interests you, give me some “love” on it in the comments below and you just might inspire me to bump it up my to-do list faster! ;~)
