New to the site. Has any one else got an “internal server error message:500”, when selecting the “school store and downloads” tab?

Hi all! I am Anna, from Holland.
I don’t know how this all works yet, but I hope I will soon 😉
Very excited to start jamming instead of playing just from sheetmusic. Hope to learn that here!

        Indentation Test

Hey Nat! Thanks for being the first to try out our new version of the FJi Bulletin Board! We are trying to make things simpler on the site. That you’ve found it and have posted, seems to be confirmation that we are on the right track!
As to Vibrato… it’s a rather difficult to teach subject I think. Why us humans like it, I do not have a clue… it makes very little logical sense, but regardless, we do think it a beautification.
So, how to do it? I do have that older video on the site: http://fiddlejaminstitute.com/test-youtube-embed-link-1/
It is time for an update on this subject though.
I recommend being able to play without touching the side of your violin neck for a good length of time. This is a requirement for good vibrato. I personally do NOT play like that all the time, but my hand DOES lift off the side of the neck whenever I do begin to vibrato. Hope that gets you on the path. I will bump vibrato videos up my to-do list.

What you like to be called… Geoff or Fitz or Mister?

Great to be No 1.. glad it is working for you… will try not to annoy.

Your lessons are so useful and helpful and I admire your playing skill. Stephane Grappali is my patron saint. I am from Galveston originally and zydeco is part of the music scene… you ever play with Tab Benoit (SP) – guy rocks. Think he is from Homma. I play spoons, cajone and washboard sometimes with zydeco guys.

Everything you do is a beautification of music so vibrating a little just adds to the flavor… I am both vibro and publically challenged… can’t play in front of people on fiddle ‘cept kids and close friends… both fine musicians. I was a fair drummer – still am but old – so playing badly mortifies me. Thanks for advice… will do… rubbing matchbox and pretending to vibrate at top of neck while supporting instrument with palm of L hand… helps some. Got me some turkey feathers from Mtn. Home, AK for my fiddle Imitation is the supreme compliment…. I write books so in the unlikely event you like military history buy my books so I can play more fiddle.

I’m transitioning to Fitz these days! Feathers! …cool! I’m honored. Books? If you do not have one of mine already, I’d do a swap with you if you want.

    Hi,

Hope somebody notices this missive. Ardent student and daily player… confused by something Fitz does. He has spoken about not worrying about vibrato too much and poking a bit of fun at classical violinists… but he instantly starts vibrating at a half or full note,,, maybe even 1/4 on slow tempo when offering example. Enhances music marvelously and I can’t do it… tried beaucuop vibrato for dummies efforts.. all my failure. Any ideas. Latest twist is rubbing matchbox. Am percussionist by training and 50 years playing… so coordination isn’t issue.

Vibrato is not the easiest thing to teach in my opinion and is very influenced by personal nuance, but Check out what I DO have on Vibrato. I think this video was one of the first ones I produced when getting FJi started! Time for an update soon!

Thanks for participating in this feature! It will greatly influence what lessons I produce in the future!!

I couldn’t without logging in… sure works better. Liked truck talk “fan” commiseration. J.J. Cale for me… Can’t get enough. Play everyday… always buying more.
