Ashokian Farewell Lessons

A beautiful song written by Jay Ungar.  It was used as the main theme music for Ken Burns Civil War series.  It sounds very mid-1800’s for sure, but was actually written in 1985!  It is a great tune.  I have often played it at funerals (even my own grandmother’s recently).  It doesn’t have to be saved for funerals though… pull it out whenever you might need a pretty song!

Non-members: Want to learn more about this tune?… members will also see a single note chart, audio performance track, backing track, advanced solo double drone chart & audio ++…

    Hey G.
Just joined up. Im 65. Played in a country rock band 30 years ago…mainly harmonica. Learned a few parts at the bottom of the neck for Charlie Daniels songs. Couldn’t sit down and play not even one fiddle song all the way through. Got away with murder because there was no competition in my area. Left-handed playing right-handed fiddle. No computer/ internet so I didn’t know I could get a left hand chin rest. Retired now and got a chin rest and shoulder rest and found I can play in those other positions more easily than I imagined. Cant read but I hope to change that. I used to hold my bow like a claw hammer. Changed that. Playing ten hours a day and hope ASHOKAN FAREWELL will be my first play all the way through song. This written music will help me learn to read as I have a clip on tuner and I will back-engineer the reading process.( also tuner helps keep me honest on pitch). You are a great player and your lesson structure is perfect for my needs. Man your ear is dead on. Thanks for keeping this incredibly affordable as my house burned to the ground last summer (fiddle survived as it was in a closet, all but the catgut that holds the tailpiece busted but I fixed that) and I am living with one of my kids. Have a spot carved out in the garage with my computer and instrument. I am basically starting over again and your program will really accelerate the process which I need because I am 65 after all. Sorry about the entire life story. LOL. Just wanted you to read my appreciation for what you do. I know there are few artists that can have a middle-class income. You either make 10k/year or ten million/yr in the arts. Hardly anything in between. So I hope we are helping each other. Thanks again and hope your video lesson business is successful for you and selfishly for me as well. It is exactly what I was looking for.

    Respectfully,

    Steve Middleton

      Sincerely,

PS: definitely NOT in the 10 million category (yet! Ha.)
